Gender Equity Issues

What do we mean when we say the Carolina Women's Center pursues gender equity? Our current work focuses on the following five broad areas:

Redefining Gender Norms: Our work seeks to raise awareness of the consequences-for people of all genders-of socially created roles and expectations and, ultimately, to encourage the social and political change necessary to achieve gender equity.

Violence Prevention: The Center is a key partner on both campus and community task forces working to coordinate antiviolence education and awareness efforts focusing on sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking.

Family Advocacy: The CWC is engaged in policy and advocacy work on behalf of all families at UNC-Chapel Hill. We seek to expand access to affordable child care and equitable parental leave and provide programs and services that support Carolina families.

Closing Gender Gaps: We work to help create an educational and work environment in which disparate treatment based on gender is eradicated and everyone is able to live, learn, teach, and work without threat of unequal treatment.

Combating Sex Trafficking: The CWC's policy, advocacy, and educational efforts are aimed at eradicating sex trafficking in the state and worldwide. The Center generates and facilitates research and knowledge about trafficking practices and raises awareness about the consequences of trafficking for individuals and communities.
