Education

The Carolina Women's Center makes significant contributions to the intellectual life of the University. CWC initiatives such as the Feminist Faculty Discussion Group provide a supportive space for feminist scholars on campus to share knowledge and ideas. Our library, the Mary Turner Lane Reading and Resource Room, supports teaching, research, and individual intellectual enrichment with its growing collection of feminist texts, current periodicals, and audiovisual materials.

CWC programs and events are the public face of the Center and a visible way that we demonstrate our commitment to women's empowerment and gender equity. Our monthly event calendar features diverse programs—from films and speakers to panel discussions and performances. Our ongoing and annual programs include:

  • Women's Week: This week-long, campus-wide celebration of gender equity and women's empowerment is the CWC’s signature event of the year! A diverse calendar of events open to all members of the campus community.
  • HAVEN: HAVEN workshops help faculty, staff, and students become informed allies for survivors of sexual assault and relationship violence. HAVEN trainings cover myths, facts, and statistics about interpersonal violence, as well as the resources available to address survivors' needs and concerns.
  • Global Women's Issues Luncheon Series: The CWC partners with the Area Studies centers in the Global Education Center to present lunchtime presentations by local scholars focusing on global gender issues.
  • Sites of Struggle: This ongoing collaboration with the Curriculum in Women's Studies, Afro and African American Studies, and the Institute for African American Research plans annual programs that focus on the intersections of race and gender.
  • Brown Bag Film Series: Monthly lunchtime screenings in our Carriage House Lounge of films exploring topics related to women's diverse lives and experiences.
  • Masculinity Matters: A series of programs, workshops, and events for and about men aimed at understanding men’s issues and how masculinity is constructed in our culture.
  • Women's Leadership programs: The CWC works in partnership with Carolina Leadership Development on programs to support existing and emerging women leaders on campus. The Center also helps plan the annual Women in Leadership Development (WILD) conference, a one-day leadership event co-sponsored by nine local colleges and universities.
  • Diversity Education Team: The CWC is a member of the DET, which works to increase awareness and promote productive dialogue around issues of diversity and inclusion.
  • Annual theme programming: From Women's Equality Day in August to Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April, we collaborate year-round with campus and community partners to produce theme programming in honor of annual gender and diversity-related recognition events.
