The Haven Program is a campus community-wide initiative between UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University to increase support for student survivors of sexual violence and to further the universities' efforts to prevent sexual violence. The idea is to create multiple "safe spaces" around the campus for students to go for information, discussion, and referral. Faculty and staff may attend a HAVEN training session and then receive a sign for their door which indicates that they are a safe space to go to discuss issues around sexual violence. View a list of Haven allies at UNC below.

HAVEN is sponsored by the Carolina Women's Center, the UNC Office of the Dean of Students and the Duke University Women's Center. The program is funded in part by the Robertson Collaborative Grant program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long is the training? What if I can’t stay for the whole thing?

HAVEN trainings are four hours long. Participants are required to arrive on time and stay for the entire training. We have found that participants coming late/leaving early is very disruptive to others in the training.

Q: How do I register?

You can register for HAVEN by e-mailing Hillary Winter at hwinter@email.unc.edu. Be sure to indicate which date you would like to attend.

Q: Those training times span my usual lunch/dinner hour! Will there be food?

We provide refreshments during breaks when possible (budget allowing). You will be notified when you register whether or not we will be able to provide food. We want you to be comfortable, so feel free to bring a snack and drink if you need them!

Q: No location is listed for my training date. How will I know where to go?

You will be notified of the training location when you receive your registration confirmation.

Q: Is HAVEN for women only?

No, our trainings are for everyone. All genders are welcome and encouraged to attend!

Q: I am a graduate student. Do I attend the student training or the faculty/staff training?

We frequently offer trainings especially for graduate students, recognizing the unique role you play as students and teachers. If you do not see a grad student date listed, you can choose to attend the student OR faculty/staff training.

Q: I completed HAVEN training but have lost / have not yet received my door sign. Who should I contact?

If you have questions about your door sign, send an email to dos@unc.edu
